Post-Op Instructions
  • An abortion is one of the safest medical procedures performed today.

  • Recovery is rapid and most patients resume their normal activities the same
    day or the next day.

  • You may have no bleeding after the procedure or you may bleed for as long
as two weeks. The bleeding might also stop and then start again. These patterns
    are all considered normal.

  • Use sanitary napkins, instead of tampons

  • You may experience menstrual-like cramps for a short time following your
procedure. You can take pain relieving medications, EXCEPT those containing
    aspirin.

  • A post-operative examination about two weeks after the procedure will be
made to confirm that the uterus has returned to its normal size.

  • You may have sexual intercourse one week after the procedure, but be aware
that you can become pregnant again at that time. Birth control pills are
provided for free by your doctor at New York OB/GYN Associates.

  • Your next period is expected to begin sometime between four to eight weeks
from the day of the abortion.
Call the office if any of the following occur:
  • You have more bleeding than with a normal period (soaking 2 pads per hour).

  • Bleeding lasts longer than two weeks.

  • Your temperature is more than 100.4 degrees

  • You have cramps or abdominal pain, which is not relieved by pain relieving medication.

  • There is persistent vaginal discharge.

  • You develop pain or symptoms of a period with no blood flow.
Frequently Asked Questions
  • Will the abortion make me sterile?

No. An abortion should not affect your fertility and you can become pregnant
    again after two weeks.

  • When can I exercise or go swimming?

Starting the next day, you can exercise, swim, tub bathe, etc.

  • Why am I having brown vaginal discharge?

If the bleeding is light (spotting), the blood mixes with vaginal secretions and becomes brown in color

  • What should I do if my breasts seem to be developing milk?

If you have this complaint, do not do anything. Do not express the milk by
squeezing the breasts. When the hormone levels return to normal, the breasts
will also return to normal. However, if the breasts are also very painful, you
    may take Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

  • Can a woman still be pregnant after having an abortion?

Yes, however we prevent this possible complication by examining the pregnancy tissue immediately after the procedure. This exam confirms that the patient is no longer pregnant. The tissue is also sent to a pathologist for a final report.
