Early-2ndTrimester
Surgical Abortions
(12 to 14 Weeks) - General Info |
 |
A Surgical Abortion is one
of the safest outpatient procedures there is. We would like
to emphasis that to date we have had NO PATIENT COMPLICATIONS
IN OUR OFFICE. We have accomplished this by only using disposable
equipment for our procedures, and by emphasizing cleanliness
and sterility throughout our office. Our patient’s safety and
care is our number one priority.
Early Second Trimester Abortions
(12-14 weeks) require more cervical dilation than a first trimester
abortion. To accomplish this, dilators (laminaria) must be inserted
into the cervical canal early in the morning.
The abortion procedure will be performed
a sufficient time after insertion of the laminaria. The
procedure will be performed using dilation and vacuum curettage,
a suction method of emptying the uterine contents. This
procedure is performed by qualified Board Certified Gynecologist
under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia.
How
Does Laminaria Work?
Laminaria absorbs vaginal fluid like
a sponge and slowly helps to stretch, open, and soften the cervix.
This is done to avoid rapid dilation and possible damage to
the cervix (cervical incompetence), which may adversely affect
future pregnancies.
The use of laminaria helps to make the
abortion safer and less painful.
